Sean Mee’s engagement, passion and dedication to community arts and cultural practice is second to none. He has worked as an actor, director, dramaturg, writer, arts advocate and teacher. He specialises in the development and production of premiere works and music theatre. Sean has extensive experience in community theatre, including as director and team leader for the QUT team at the landmark Behind the Cane project for QMF in 2011.
Sean began his professional career at La Boite Theatre in 1976 as a teacher/actor in the Early Childhood Drama Project, a Theatre-in-Education team for infants. Whilst at La Boite, he also acted in several main-house productions and began directing in 1977. He also directed for TN!, with productions such as the world premieres of Summerland by Janis Balodis and a trilogy of plays for young children written by Valerie Foley, Deckchair Canopy, Clouds and Password. Sean was Artistic Coordinator of TN!2 (1986 – 1990), an ensemble of young actors, devising and touring productions to remote Queensland communities.
From 1990-98, he taught within the QUT Academy of the Arts as an Associate Lecturer in Acting and Direction. He completed a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1997 and was a principal artist with the Academy Centre for Innovation in the Arts where his research centred on multi-disciplinary performance using technology, culminating in the multimedia-multi-art-form Cybercity Cabaret, produced by QUT in association with the Queensland Biennial Festival of Music.
In October 2000, Sean was appointed Artistic Director of La Boite Theatre Company, Brisbane. In 1998, Sean served as a member of the Peer Assessment Panel (Performing Arts) for Arts Queensland. In 1999, he was appointed for a 3-year term as a member of the Theatre Board of the Australia Council for the Arts.
Sean was President of Playlab, supporting playwrights in Queensland, from 1992 – 1995, a foundation member of the governing committee of QTIA (Queensland Theatre Industry Alliance) 1998 and a member of the Board/Artistic Advisory Panel of the Australian National Playwrights’ Centre from 2001 – 2003.
In 1995, Sean was awarded a special Matilda Award for his sustained contribution to Queensland Theatre. In 2001, he received his second Matilda Award for his performance as Milo in La Boite Theatre’s production of Milo’s Wake, and also for his direction of Box the Pony. In 2008, He was awarded the QUT Outstanding Alumni Award for Creative Industries.
In October 2008, Sean stood down from the Artistic Directorship of La Boite Theatre Company after 8 years. He is currently a faculty member of QUT Creative Industries.
