“If I didn’t define myself for myself I’d be crunched into other people’s fantasies and eaten alive.” – Audre Lorde
Inspired by Audre Lorde’s quote, Candy Bowers’ show is a call to the centre and an exploration of self-worth. Developed from her experiences working with teenagers from diverse backgrounds, this simple and direct one woman show asks “what does it feel like to identify as beautiful?”
The work unpacks media representation, the dominant gaze, cultural appropriation and the wild world of celebrity; provoking critical thinking and emotional literacy. Candy uses poetry, storytelling and hip hop to guide her young audience across difficult and sticky terrain in the hope of sparking radical self-love.
